Twice in this place.
First time, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner - Sean (as far as I can remember!) who was very kind to introduce me to his bar and to some of his customers - and also very chatty. A great big Irish welcome if ever there was, far from home its great to see.
Tried the Guinness - was told by Sean its coming directly from Dublin - but truth be told it wasn't a great pint at all- sorry to say.
Also, the ex pats were the young and bright eyed - a tad bit boring for an old pro and grumpy curmudgeon like myself!
Needed to give the Guinness a chance - so ventured in for another try out - and was happy to say it was much better second time round - disaster diverted! Good pint.
Settled down for my pint and ordered some food - at least what I could afford with the very steep prices - got some cheesy chips and gravy - was nice and tasty but coming in at about 17.62 euros with the pint - I nearly felt like i was back home in Dublin with those prices! LOL.
Anyway good ex pat place if that floats your boat - I like my bars to be down and dirty - as a muck savage perhaps I'm not the type of clientele they are going for! Ok, after a few days of the usual Chinese fare and surroundings I thought I look for something “western” and found the Happy Monk on the internet. Looked ok, so I ventured out with my VNPd GoogleMap. Little did I know. Google Maps are WAY off in China for national security (???) reasons, so it took me quite a while to even find the place. In the end a combination of Apple maps (!) and some gut feeling led me to the Happy Monk.
Ok place, very pub-like (and that’s what I needed that evening), AND THEY ACCEPT (non-Chinese) CREDIT CARDs!!! EVERONE in China pays with their phones, and credit cards and ATMs will be the phone booths of the 2020s here, definitely.
But I digress.
The pub is nice, with a mix of native and expat/tourist crowd. They have eight beers on draft, none of them Chinese, which I found a bit sad, but ok. Large Carlsberg is 35 CNY, large Heineken 45 CNY. Ok.
The music is 100% western. Three screens, all showing music videos, no sports (but maybe there was nothing going on that night).
Staff very friendly, but a bit difficult to communicate with. However, that seems to be THE service sector problem for us non-Chinese here.

I took an evening river cruise when I was in Guangzhou recently and it was an amazing experience. I got my tickets at the counter located near the base of Canton Tower. The crew here was very helpful and polite and they spent time answering questions from tourists about the cruise itself. After getting the ticket, I was directed to the pier which is less than 10mins walk from the ticket counter. Despite the large crowd, the team at the pier was efficient and got all of us boarded quickly. Light refreshments was served onboard during the cruise. I sat at the top, open deck. The boat moved slowly to give us plenty of opportunity to take pictures of the night view and lights from both sides of the river. It gets especially crowded on weekends, but there’s only one narrow, one-way road leading into the area, which causes long traffic jams. To avoid getting stuck, it’s best to arrive early. However, leaving can be just as challenging—around midnight is actually the peak time, with heavy traffic as crowds pour in and out.
If you're planning to take an Uber, don’t request it right at the main exit. Due to the traffic, drivers often can’t get through and may ask you to cancel. Instead, walk about 500 meters to the nearest intersection, where it’s much easier to catch a ride.
We only visited one Western-style restaurant, and the food was average at best—I'd give it 3 stars. This place is incredible! The view is absolutely stunning! It is located on the 99th floor of the Four Seasons Hotel, and there’s no better spot to see the city and the Canton Tower, especially if you request a nonsmoking table.
While the food selection is limited to a few snacks, the cocktails are exceptional.
